Safety Rules: Revised August 3, 20261. Always keep the muzzle of your firearm pointed in a safe direction, provided that direction is safe enough. Note: if no safe direction is available, keep the firearm cased or holstered.2. Always treat every firearm as if it is loaded.3. Always IMMEDIATELY personally prove every firearm you handle is unloaded.4. Always keep the firearm unloaded until you are ready to use it.5. Always keep the action of the firearm open until you are ready to use it.6. Always keep the safety of the firearm on until you are ready to shoot.7. Always keep your finger off the trigger and outside of and above the trigger guard of the firearm until you are ready to shoot.8. Always be sure of your target, of what is around your target, of what is between you and your target and what is beyond your target.9. Always know how to safely operate the firearm.10. Always be sure the firearm is safe to operate.11. Always wear eye and hearing protection.12. Never use alcohol, or drugs, including some prescription drugs before, or while handling firearms.13. Always be sure you have the correct ammunition for the firearm you are using.14. Be aware some shooting sports/activities may have different safety considerations.15. Always store firearms and ammunition so unauthorized persons will not have access to them.16. If you open your firearm case, and the firearm is not pointing in a safe direction, keep your hands off the firearm. Close the case and turn the case so the firearm is pointing in safe direction, then open the case. Note: You do not have to fasten the latches on the case.17. Always IMMEDIATELY obey any/all cease fire commands. See cease fire procedures listed below. 18. Always have your bright yellow or bright green 155 thousandths of an inch in diameter (weed whacker string)/clear chamber and barrel indicator (CCBI) installed and protruding several inches from the breech and muzzle of the firearm whenever you are not actively shooting. Note: Always install the CCBI through the breech, or chamber end of the firearm, never through the muzzle. Note: The CCBI must be protruding at least four inches from the muzzle and from the breech. Note: When removing the CCBI, always pull it from the breech, or chamber end, never from the muzzle end.
The order of Cease Fire steps is tailored for specific firearms. This is the Cease Fire order for a Savage Mark II rifle. As an example, this order will not work on a 1911 pistol.
Cease fire immediate actions: Savage Mark II bolt action rifle. ALL WHILE KEEPING THE MUZZLE POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION:1. IMMEDIATELY take your finger off the trigger.2. Open the action and look to see the chamber is empty.3. Put the safety on.4. Remove the magazine.5. Install the clear chamber and bore indicator (CCBI). Note: Always install the CCBI through the breech, or chamber end of the firearm, never through the muzzle. Note: The CCBI must be protruding at least four inches from the muzzle and from the breech. Note: When removing the CCBI, always pull it from the breech, or chamber end, never from the muzzle end.6. Place the firearm down with the open action facing up.7. Step back from the firing line far enough to be unable to touch the firearm. Note: The safety on this rifle can only be engaged if the action is in the cocked configuration; the bolt handle is in the full up position, or the bolt handle has been raised and then positioned back in the forward and locked position but the rifle has not been fired. The safety can't be engaged if the rifle has been fired, or dry fired and the bolt handle is still in locked configuration; the bolt handle is in the forward and down position.
Cease fire immediate actions: Colt 1911 semi-automatic pistol. ALL WHILE KEEPING THE MUZZLE POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION:1. IMMEDIATELY take your finger off the trigger.2. Remove the magazine.3. Open the action, lock the slide to the rear of the pistol, and look to see the chamber is empty.4. Install the clear chamber and bore indicator (CCBI). Note: Always install the CCBI through the breech, or chamber end of the firearm, never through the muzzle. Note: The CCBI must be protruding at least four inches from the muzzle and from the breech. Note: When removing the CCBI, always pull it from the breech, or chamber end, never from the muzzle end.5. Place the firearm down with the open action facing up.6. Step back from the firing line far enough to be unable to touch the firearm. Note: The safety can only be engaged on this pistol with the slide locked forward. Note, the slide can't be moved back towards the rear of the pistol with the safety engaged. Note: The action of the pistol can not be opened with the safety engaged; slide can not be moved to the rear of the pistol with the safety engaged.
